A
Absorption

Active Speaker

Ambient Lighting
General lighting that provides overall illumination, setting the mood before, during, or after performances. Used extensively in UAE weddings and gala dinners.
Analog Mixer
A mixing console that processes audio in analog form. Still popular for smaller events and as backup systems.
Array
A group of speakers or lights arranged to work together, such as a line array for sound or a lighting array for large stages.
B
Backline
The musical instruments and amplifiers provided for performers, such as drum kits, guitar amps, and keyboards. Many UAE rental companies offer full backline packages.
Balanced Cable
An audio cable (such as XLR or TRS) that uses three wires to reduce noise and interference, crucial for long cable runs in large UAE venues.
Beam Angle
The spread of light from a fixture, measured in degrees. Narrow beams are used for spotlights; wider beams for washes.
Blackout
A lighting cue where all stage lights are turned off, often for dramatic effect or scene changes.
Bluetooth Audio
Wireless audio transmission via Bluetooth. Used for background music in lounges and smaller UAE events.

Cabling
The wires and connectors used to transmit audio, video, and power signals. High-quality, heat-resistant cabling is essential for outdoor UAE events.
Channel
A single path for audio or lighting control, such as a microphone input or a DMX address.
Clipping
Distortion caused when an amplifier or mixer is overloaded. Can damage speakers—especially in high-SPL UAE events.
Color Gel
A transparent colored sheet placed in front of a light to change its color. Used for creative effects in stage and architectural lighting.
Compressor
An audio processor that reduces the dynamic range of a signal, making loud sounds quieter and quiet sounds louder. Essential for live vocals and instruments.
Condenser Microphone
A sensitive microphone requiring phantom power, ideal for vocals and acoustic instruments in controlled environments.
Crossfade
A gradual transition from one audio or lighting cue to another, used in theatre and live music.
D
DAW (Digital Audio Workstation)
Software for recording, editing, and producing audio. Used in UAE studios and for live show playback.
DI Box (Direct Injection Box)
A device that converts high-impedance instrument signals to low-impedance, balanced signals suitable for mixing consoles.
DMX (Digital Multiplex)
The industry-standard protocol for controlling stage lighting and effects equipment. DMX512 is widely used in UAE venues.
DSP (Digital Signal Processor)
Hardware or software that processes audio signals for EQ, compression, delay, and more. Found in modern mixers and speakers.
Drop
A sudden lowering of a curtain or scenic element, or a dramatic lighting change.
E
EQ (Equalizer)
A device or software that adjusts the balance of different frequency components in an audio signal. Used for tuning PA systems in UAE venues.
Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlight (ERS)
A stage light known for its sharp beam and ability to project patterns (gobos).
Ethernet Control
Using network cables and protocols (like Art-Net or sACN) to control lighting and audio equipment, increasingly common in large UAE productions.
F
Feedback
The loud squeal or howl caused when a microphone picks up sound from a speaker and re-amplifies it. Proper system setup and EQ help prevent this.
Fog Machine
A device that produces dense vapor to enhance lighting effects. Used in concerts, clubs, and weddings across the UAE.
Fresnel
A type of spotlight with a soft-edged beam, ideal for general stage lighting.
Front of House (FOH)
The area where the main sound and lighting control is located, typically facing the stage.

Gain
The amount of amplification applied to an audio signal at the input stage.
Gobo
A stencil or template placed inside or in front of a light source to project patterns or logos onto a surface. Custom gobos are popular for branding at UAE events.
Ground Support
Truss structures and rigging systems used to support lighting, audio, and video equipment.

Haze Machine
Produces a fine mist that makes light beams visible without obscuring the stage. Popular in UAE nightclubs and concerts.
Headset Microphone
A microphone worn on the head, leaving hands free for performers or presenters.
Hybrid Console
A mixing desk that combines analog and digital features, offering flexibility for UAE events.
I
Impedance
The resistance of a circuit to alternating current, measured in ohms. Matching impedance is important for optimal audio performance.
In-Ear Monitors (IEMs)

Intelligent Lighting

Limiter
An audio processor that prevents signals from exceeding a set level, protecting speakers from damage.
Lighting Console

Mixer
A device that combines and processes multiple audio signals.
Moving Head
A type of intelligent lighting fixture capable of automated pan, tilt, and color changes.
Multicore (Snake)
A cable assembly that carries multiple audio or lighting signals, reducing cable clutter.
Multizone System
An audio or lighting system divided into separate zones, each with independent control. Useful for large UAE venues.

Noise Gate
An audio processor that mutes signals below a certain threshold, reducing background noise.
Networked Audio

Rider

UHF (Ultra High Frequency)

Up-lighting

VCA (Voltage Controlled Amplifier)

Video Wall

Wash Light

Watt

Yoke
