Box vs triangular truss: load and application

Box truss has four chords running its length, giving it significantly higher load capacity and less deflection under weight, which makes it the standard choice for anything structural carrying real fixture load. Triangular truss is lighter and cheaper with only three chords, suitable for decorative spans and light-duty fixture loads, but should not be substituted for box truss on structural spans carrying moving heads or PARs.

Calculating rig weight and safe working load

Every truss product lists a safe working load and span rating that should be checked against your actual total rig weight — for example a span carrying several beam moving heads plus clamps and cable, not just the fixtures themselves. Underestimating total rig weight by ignoring accessory and cable weight is a common and avoidable planning mistake — always calculate with a safety margin.

Truss towers, bases and ballast

Truss towers and bases need adequate ballast or ground anchoring to remain stable under wind load or the lateral forces from moving head pan and tilt movement, particularly for outdoor or freestanding installs without building attachment points. T-stands and crank stands for small rigs
